many aspects of physiology. One of its primary functions, however, is the transport of oxygen from the lungs to the bodys tissues. Hemoglobin is a complex protein composed
of five percent heme and ninety five percent globin. The heme contains the iron that is so critical to physiology. The heme also imparts the red color to
blood. Globin, in turn, is a colorless component of the hemoglobin molecule. The heme serves as an oxygen attractor in the hemoglobin molecule (Norris, 2004). Indeed, hemoglobins
small, spherical, and soft morphology makes it the ideal transport mechanism because it easily makes it way through the sometimes constrictive environment of the bodys small blood vessels.
One gram of hemoglobin can carry up to 1.3 ml of oxygen (Hickman Hickman and Hickman, 2007). The hemoglobin stores the oxygen
in a loose and fully reversible way so that it can be easily released to the tissues through which it passes on an as needed basis (Hickman Hickman and Hickman,
2007). While numerous factors can affect hemoglobins ability to transport oxygen, one of the most concerning is anemia, a disease whose name can be traced to an ancient Greek
word that translates to mean "without blood". The term "anemia", however, encompasses a variety of specific physiological disorders, underlying causes, and clinical consequences. Among the more interesting of
anemias are ABO incompatibility, hemolytic anemia, sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, pernicious anemia, iron deficiency anemia, polycythemia, and leukemia.
ABO incompatibility ABO incompatibility results when two non-compatible blood types are mixed. This can occur by
