Open Handset Alliance1 (AOSP, 2011). The ongoing development of the system has been allocated to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). By comparison the iPhone operating system may be seen
as far more closed, with a high level of control over the development and maintenance of the system retained by Apple, indicating two very different approaches to the development of
the operating systems. Whether there really is any type of competition can be seen by comparing and contrasting these two operating systems. The Android operating system is based on
open source software; the system has been developed by modifying the Linux kernel. The open source approach can be seen as a major advantage as this had increased the flexibility
in the way that the OS is used (Sharma and Delaney, 2007). The basic Android OS can be adapted and changed by the different telephone suppliers in order to
provide the features and functionality that is required to support the use of the units that they are selling (Sharma and Delaney, 2007). This can be an advantage in terms
of the flexibility, but it can also be a disadvantage as it results in different handsets with the Android OS having potentially different functionality. Furthermore, if one versions of Android
has a bug there may be a requirement to wait for the developer to issue a patch, which they may not undertake. However, with many third party developers able to
work on the system and find improvements the result is arguably, one of the most efficient operating systems for handsets. The increased flexibility for development also allows for a wide
range of third party developers to create different apps which are able to increase the functionality of the phones. The desktop presentation
