a "symbolic story which demonstrates, in Alan Watts words, the inner meaning of the universe and of human life" (Greeley 11). As this suggests, through his use of this word,
Greeley endeavors to show the significance of the story of Jesus to society and culture. He does not equate "myth" with "legend" and feels his use of this word is
in no way a reference to the existence or non-existence of an historical Jesus. He points out that this usage of the term "myth" is common to "historians of religion,
literary critics and social scientists" and it is primarily as a social scientist, that is, as a sociologist, that Greeley approaches his topic, which is the message and the life
of Jesus of Nazareth. However, while Greeley admits that begins his observations "with the perspective of the sociology of religion," he clarifies this by saying that he is not
primarily engaged with sociological analysis in this text (Greeley 19). He likewise rejects various other intentions, such as seeking to convert others to his religious views. Rather, Greeley writes, first
of all, for himself in order "to clarify and deepen" his understanding to the meaning of the life of Jesus and his teaching (Greeley 25). Secondly, he writes for the
edification of readers who seek, like him, to try to deepen their understanding of Christianity. In accomplishing this task, Greeley takes his readers through a lucid, concise summary of
his own exploration of contemporary Christian theology, which, of course, covers basically the first half of the twentieth century, as Greeley wrote his text in the last 1960s. This survey
