Although first voiced in the latter nineteenth century, Andrew Carnegies views of wealth are quite applicable to contemporary times. Even
a casual glance at the nations newspapers affirms that there is indeed a very distinct difference in material lifestyle between the wealthiest individuals of this country and the poorest.
There is also considerable disagreement about whether that distinction should exist. Carnegie contended in the nineteenth century that the distinction between the economic echelons evolved with civilization, that in
more primitive times such distinctions really did not exist and that in those ancient times "neither master nor servant was as well situated" as what he observed about him during
his lifetime. Carnegie also made another astute observation. He wrote that the economic distinction between the rich and the poor is:
"beyond our power to alter....it is a waste of time to criticize the inevitable"
Just as was the case in Carnegies time, however, today our society seems to devote a tremendous amount of effort in
this criticism. Everyone holds blame equally in this phenomena. The poor criticize the rich and the rich criticize the poor. Carnegie insists that the laborer is just
as entitled to his meager savings as the millionaire is to his millions. But what about the poorest of the poor? In the U.S. this class is represented
by the thousands that make up our welfare rolls. Carnegie did not recognize this socioeconomic class because it did not exist in his time.
