the world placed a numerical value on temperature. He is credited wit the design of the Celsius scale, that temperature scale that is employed by most of the technologically
advanced nations of the world (the United States being the most obvious exception). That Celsius was able to make such a dramatic contribution to the world is no wonder
given that he came from a family of scientists. Celsiuss father, Nils Celsius, was a professor in astronomy and Celsius paternal grandfather was a professor in mathematics (Astro.uu, 2004).
Celsius maternal grandfather was a professor in astronomy as well, a career path that Celsius would ultimately choose for himself (Astro.uu, 2004). Working as an astronomer during this
relatively technologically limited time in history Celsius was able to make some phenomenal observations. These included:
"observations of eclipses and various astronomical objects" and extensive publication of "catalogues of carefully determined magnitudes for a total of 300 stars using his own photometric system (mean
error=0.4 mag). The idea of his system consists of using identical transparent glass plates and viewing the ray of light from a star through them. He could then compare the
magnitudes of the stars by the number of glass plates needed to extinguish the light (Astro.uu, 2004).
Celsius did not limit himself to the study of far off stars, however. He saw more imminent problems in some of the simplest task that
confronted him and his fellow scientists. He turned his carefully refined scientific methodology towards bettering of our understanding of, and ability to quantify, various phenomena that occurred right
