Came: The North and the Secession Crisis 1860-1861," is but one more book in a long line of books. The difference between Stampps book and others appears to be that
this author addresses some very finite matters in relationship to President Lincoln and the Civil War. There are many theories about Lincolns beliefs and Lincolns involvement during the Civil
War. The history books of old illustrate a kind and vulnerable man who was only out to free slaves. He is pictured as a man who was aghast at the
reality of slavery and because of that particular notion; the nation went to war to free the African Americans from their literal chains. As we grow and learn we discover
that the issues were not nearly so cut and dried. Lincoln was not completely enamored with the idea of slavery, but neither was he as adamant at ridding the nation
of slavery as all the history made you to believe. The truth behind the goodness of Lincoln appears to be one of the only truths that earlier history books illustrated,
and in Stampps book we get an even clear picture of the actual circumstances and situations that Lincoln faced. WE see how Lincoln felt, through the depiction of the struggles
and crises that unfolded during those crucial days of the Civil War. Lincoln, as illustrated by Stampp, was incredibly deliberate about many of his actions during the secession crisis. It
