who live in Fresno, California, living well enough, and the move north. Each of the family members seems to possess some sort of dream and goal, and throughout the novel
there are struggles and successes. One of the characters in the novel is Joey, a son of the family. Joey is a young man who has a real desire to
act as a career and throughout the novel one can see him acting, even when he is not actually on stage, acting in various ways throughout his daily life. The
following paper examines how the character acts or performs even when not literally acting on stage, and how his acting is essentially his way of finding his own identity.
And the Shadows Took Him by Daniel Chacon As noted in the introduction, the family, the Molina family, lives in a barrio in
Fresno, California in the beginning of the story. The father, William, has a relatively stable, but not a great paying, position and wants more from life, essentially desiring to achieve
the American Dream. As the father he ultimately controls where the family goes. Joey is a young man who seems to be
simply going along with life in many respects until one day his friend, Ricky, tells him about a play he is going to try out for. He tells Joey that
girls love actors and this peaks Joeys interest so that he feels he should try out as well. His friend tells him not to because it is only for good
actors, serious actors and Ricky does not believe that Joey is either. He tells Joey, "youre just going to act all goofy and make me lose my concentration" (Chacon 68).
