night and day or so much alike there is nothing to contrast. Joseph Conrads "Heart of Darkness" and Samuel Taylor Coleridges "The Rim of Ancient Mariners" lend themselves quite nicely
to the task of comparison and contrast. While each tells a story of personal pain and growth, they also introduce and explore other characters, who are not central to
the plot but central to the protagonist just as well. While both stories tell of personal tragedy, realization and growth, they are different enough that contrast is
easily defined. In Ancient Mariner the protagonist is similar to the protagonist in Heart of Darkness yet he is also strikingly different.
A young man who is minding his own business and traveling with companions to a wedding is singled out and placed under arrest by the ancient mariner.
The arrestee protests at first without much anger or violence and instead reminds his captor that weddings are a time of joy and happiness. As the
reader continues to peer beneath the top layer of the story and peek at the underpinnings he sees that the actual story isnt about the wedding guest at all, but
instead about the ancient mariner and his tale of woo. This is where the Mariner story and Heart of Darkness begin to draw similarities.
The telling of a wicked deed from the past or a ships voyage in time are the underlying themes and thumbprints to the outcome of the story.
