The following paper examines how the Nile River was seen and utilized in the daily life of ancient Egyptians. Ancient Life on the Nile River
Ancient Egyptian society depended completely upon the Nile River for all aspects of existence. "Society flourished for approximately 3000 years because of the Egyptian peoples ability to
harness the power of the river for agricultural purposes, social events, community projects, religious purposes" (Phippen, 2006). In essence, the Nile River affected and influenced every little bit of their
culture. In terms of religion, the Nile River served as something of a unique entity to observe for it did not remain
the same throughout the year. The floodwaters would return and crops would return. The Egyptians watched and observed the way the river behaved, watching it dwindle, and watching it swell
with flood waters, always changing. It was the Nile River that affected their religious beliefs as it was held that, like crops that return with the great floodwaters, so would
the dead return to their own unique world of the dead, being reborn in a sense (Phippen, 2006). The sun was also part
of this incredible balance the Egyptians observed and as such "Egyptians often buried their dead on the West bank of the Nile River presumably due to their belief that the
underworld was located in the west where the sun died each day. Relatives of the dead often buried miniature boats in their tombs to transport the soul in the afterlife"
