is apparent from the archaeological evidence which is available on Ancient Egypt that there was throughout the period from 3100 to 525 BC there was a close and significant relationship
between theology, art and architecture, and this can be seen not only in the pyramids and associated funerary remains, but also in the domestic art of the period.
An important part of Egyptian religious belief
was the need to avoid bodily decay after death, since the spirit was considered to have a continuing link with the body. In the pre-dynastic period, this was achieved by
burying bodies in shallow graves of sand, where the heat and dryness of the environment had a preservative effect. However, as funeral rites and the associated architecture became more complicated,
there were more elaborate procedures associated with the transition from life to death, including embalming, mummification and the creation of elaborate tombs designed to cater for the continuing needs
of the deceased. Reeder (1994) makes the
point that there was a strongly ritualistic and shamanic element to funeral rites: pictorial representations of funeral ceremonies invariably include a strange, shrouded figure known as the tekenu, the presence
of which Reeder explains by describing a ritual of death and rebirth undertaken by the priest who was then responsible for the ceremony of the Opening of the Mouth, an
