a form of art that has left much behind for us to study and understand. Following this incredible period in time came the Greek and then the Roman periods of
art and architecture. As would be expected the time periods and the art and architecture differed in many ways, considering the cultures were quite different and many centuries separated them
all. But, at the same time there are some very elemental aspects of the cultures that remained the same. The following paper provides a brief comparison and contrast of ancient
Egyptian art and ancient Greek and Roman art. Ancient Egyptian Art and the Art of Ancient Greece and Rome The ancient Egyptians are clearly best known for their
pyramids and their artistic elements within the theme of death and an afterlife. As one author notes, "For over three thousand years the Egyptians adhered to a prescribed set of
rules as to how a work of art in three dimensions should be presented" and it was considered quite symbolic in nature, not realistic (Ancient Egyptian Art). The art was
not altered because of changes in the society but was a very seriously prescribed form of expression. This is perhaps what makes Egyptian art different from any other art in
history. The Greeks were the first to truly follow Egypt in presenting art and representations of symbolic figures in art history and they influenced much of what the Romans did
in their art. But, unlike the Egyptians, they changed with the changing social attitudes, becoming more realistic here, focusing on great figures rather than mythological figures there. Similarly, however, in
ancient Egypt all art was related to either great figures or mythological ideals and figures. Much of the art we see from Egypt, including the pyramids which were never really
