written language was around for the ancient Egyptians and the ancient Greeks, there was not a huge population of people privy to reading or text and as such legends, ideals,
religious beliefs, and many other things were transmitted through art, whether that art be architecture, sculpture, or other forms of art. The following paper examines three pieces of art from
ancient Egypt and three pieces from Ancient Greece, with a focus on the iconography of the pieces and the cultures. Ancient Art: Egypt and Greece The first piece
to be examined is the Sacred Cat of Bast (664-525 B.C.). As the Detroit Institute of Arts (2007) states, "The Sacred Cat of Bast is associated with the goddess Bast
or Bastet, and she was sometimes represented as a human figure with the head of a cat. The natural grace, and perhaps the motherly qualities of the cat, suggested to
the Egyptians some aspect of the goddess" (Detroit Institute of Arts [1], 2007). The second to be discussed are Canopic Jars (1070-712
B.C.). These were generally very simple, yet artistically beautiful, ceramic jars that would contain the organs of individuals who were mummified. They also utilized the powerful symbolism or icons of
animals as these jars were possessed of lids which were in the form of "human, baboon, falcon, and jackal -- representing the four protective spirits called the Four Sons of
Horus" (Detroit Institute of Arts [21], 2007). The last Egyptian piece to be examined is Seated Scribe (1350 B.C.). It is a
human form and "was once part of a votive offering to Thoth, the patron god of writing" (Detroit Institute of Arts [1], 2007). This implies an icon aimed at illustrating
