Shanghai, a farm laborer--by order of Maos pro-peasant policy--and a trainee film actress. Talent scouts spotted her in the fields and selected her as a candidate for the part of "Jiang Ching" (Maos wife) in the movie "Red Azalea," a vehicle intended to vindicate the political past of Maos wifely hated spouse. This account is filled with details that may make ethnic Chinese squirm. The way that Min is forced as a child to denounce her favorite teacher--the way that the neighbors poured human excrement on Anchees familys beds in order to force them to surrender their home?the rape of Little Green?the frank discussion of Anchees sexual life?are all details that could embarrass conservative Chinese. However, throughout the account, Mins account has the ring of authenticity. She never deviates from the first-person voice of an eyewitness. While Mins account has descriptive detail, it never strays from the sort of detail that one might include in relating life events to a close, intimate friend. In other words, Mins autobiography doesnt read like fiction. Rather, the writing has an immediacy that makes the reader feel as if one is listening to the author while chatting over coffee. Min begins by describing her childhood in Shanghai and how quickly she had to take responsibility. She writes, "I was an adult since the age of five" (1). She goes on to explain how this was not unusual. Both parents were required to work. There was no child care; so, consequently, older children had to take care of younger siblings. She explains that the children she played with "all carried their familys little ones on their backs, tied with a piece of cloth.
