One such city is Winter Haven, a small city that nevertheless acts as an important nexus for tourists, thanks to its geographic centrality to the rest of the state. The Winter Haven area was settled in the late 1800s, as many individuals who had fought in the Indian Wars against indigenous tribes such as the Seminole reported to their northern families that central Florida was something of an undiscovered paradise, with a pleasant climate acclimated to growing produce and without the harsh winters that could spell disasters for crops in more northern climes. One of the reasons that the area seemed to be so ideal for agriculture was that the region in which Winter Haven is situated houses some 10,000 small lakes, one of the most dense concentration of separate freshwater bodies to be found anywhere in the world. Many families thus decided to move to the central Florida area, establishing an agricultural center that flourished through the provision of crops such as strawberries, tomatoes, peaches, and eventually oranges. Besides growing produce, settlers were attracted to the area because of its natural beauty; the soil wasnt just good for growing citrus, and could also be utilized to grow thousands of species of vibrant and exotic flowers and plant life. This reinforced the perception of the area as a paradise. Many cultural activities associated with the citys past still thrive to this day. For instance, annual festivals known as the Strawberry Festival and Orange Festival are still held in commemoration of the importance of citrus crops to the regions economy, and continue to draw a large crowd.
