2005). Gender, on the other hand, refers to behaviors and characteristics that a society considers to be either masculine or feminine (Reeder, 2005). In other words, gender is entails value
judgments that are determined by culture, rather than relating to facts determined by biological sex. Historically, the conceptualizations of gender prevalent in Western society have been quite different. Typical
behaviors, which are considered to be masculine include "aggressiveness, independence, and self-reliance" (Reeder, 2005, p. 115). Typical feminine behaviors, on other hand, are considered to be emotionally oriented, such as
being "helpful, warm and sincere" (Reeder, 2005, p. 115). Up until the last half of the twentieth century, gender roles in Western society were quite restrictive. Men were expected to
work in the public sector and women were, for the most part, expected to focus on the domestic sphere and the raising of children. The only occupations that were fully
open to women were teaching, nursing and clerical work. The womens movement and the advent of feminism brought changes in societys perception of gender roles that have been
liberating for both men and women. The woman who chooses to pursue what was previously viewed as a "male" occupation, such as being an airline pilot or a U.S. senator,
is today viewed as no less of woman for having made this choice. Conversely, more men today feel free to choose occupations that have previously been considered as "feminine," such
