the first year of the infants life" (Feeley, Gottlieb, & Zelkowitz, 2007). This is an important topic to explore as it seriously affects proper nursing practice in dealing with new
parents in the postnatal care environment. A proper scholarly literature review must identify the objectives of included literature, evaluate the work in the context of other research in the
same topic, and ultimately express where other research is limited, justifying contemporary research (Concordia University, 2011). The paper includes all these elements of a proper literature review, noting that a
lack of studying fathers in previous studies necessitates the current research. To do this, the researchers developed a study design utilizing a "qualitative longitudinal" approach in which mothers and
fathers are assessed twice, once at three months, and once at nine months, via in-home visits and responding to questionnaires about their personal experiences with their low birthweight children (Feeley,
Gottlieb, & Zelkowitz, 2007). Internal validity is dependent upon the careful development of questionnaire items, and the proper coding of responses to identified trends and patterns. The sampling plan
involved studying mother and fathers with infants weighing "less than 1500g at birth, born at less than 32 weeks gestation, and hospitalized in one of two participating NICUs in a
large eastern Canadian city" (Feeley, Gottlieb, & Zelkowitz, 2007). As with all studies, a careful sampling must be taken to avoid type I errors, in which the researchers reject a
null hypothesis that is actuall true, as well as type II errors in which researchers fail to reject a null hypothesis when the alternative hypothesis is true (Campbell, 2011).
