attention. "Precisely" is one such play that demonstrates Pinters mastery over language as well as his political views and the concerns of the time. Written in 1983 "Precisely" was written
in response to the growing tensions between Russia and America and has become one of the times most well known works dealing with the subject of power and war.
This paragraph helps the student give a brief summary of the sketch in question. The sketch begins with two men, Stephen and Roger in
a room together drinking. The men are alone arguing about a rather large figure. Their language is formal and professional. The two men differ only in how they relate to
one another. Stephen, the more verbose of the two is telling Roger about some kind of unidentified group that is stating the figure in question is much larger than the
agreed upon number that the two men believe to be correct. It is only until the end of the sketch that the audience is able to infer that the staggering
number is actually the amount of acceptable losses in a nuclear war whether the number represents the losses in a first attack or an attack done in retaliation is unknown,
and frankly, not important. What is important is the mens callous and cold nature when discussing the topic demonstrating the apathy of big government and their willingness to even tolerate
a notion of acceptable losses. At one time during Stephen and Rogers discussion other possible figures creep up all shot down as impossible and unlikely. Twenty million is the set
number of acceptable civilian losses. At the time that Pinter penned "Precisely" he had began writing politically charged works and, in fact, had agreed to write a piece about disarmament
