film opens with the character of Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett), in considerable danger. The problem is that Queen Mary is dying and Elizabeth is next in line for the throne,
but she is a Protestant and this is in clear conflict with the ideas perpetuated during the Reformation. Indeed, this
film provides rich insight into the political and religious turmoil of the day. England went through a very turbulent time in regards to religion and political rule. The
fact that Elizabeth was Protestant was problematic because at the time Queen Mary had brought Catholicism back to the country, and viciously persecuted those who were Protestants. Protestantism was
the result of Henry VIII, the father of Elizabeth, who broke away from Rome and declared his country Protestant. When his son, Edward died, the country was then in
the hands of Mary - a staunch Catholic determined to return things to as they had been. The Reformation was
a very intense time in Englands history, and bitter fights between the Protestants and Catholics raged. The fact that the "official" religion of the country kept changing in response
to the personal allegiances of the Royals further ignited chaos and persecution. The fact that the film Elizabeth highlights the sense of fear Elizabeth felt as Queen Mary was
dying is in fact very indicative of the fear of all Protestants at the time who had suffered through the reign of Queen Mary and her hatred of Protestants.
Furthermore, this film highlights the extreme turbulence of the Royals at that time. Henry VIII had been married several times,
