HAZARD The word hazard can be used in various ways including as a noun, a verb, or an adjective. In Shakespeares The Merchant of Venice, while the word is
used eleven times in the entire play, we will see all manners of meanings of this word in use. Also, when one analyzes this play much more closely, it
can be seen that there are places where the word hazard is implied, as well. If we were to count these places the word hazard would have come up
more times than one could count. THE USES OF THE WORD HAZARD IN MERCHANT OF VENICE The first time the word hazard is used is when Bassanio, an aristocrat
who has lost all of his money, comes and asks Antonio to loan him some money. Bassanio knows that Antonio has loaned money before and has never seen it
again. This time, however, Bassanio urges Antonio to loan it one more time while Bassanio will bring the latter hazard back again. Of course this refers to the
loan, and the implication here is that there is a definite hazard of loaning money once again to Bassanio. Like most desperate people, Bassanio promises the hazard of loaning
