-- properly! Author Cormac McCarthy misses the days where real cowboys and Indians, not just John Wayne and Tonto impersonations, roamed the wide spaces of the open prairie. This was a time when men felt they could control their destiny, when their place in the universe was clearly defined and unchanging. His epic 1992 novel, All the Pretty Horses, is an eloquent eulogy to Old West that exists now only in myth. The first part of McCarthys Border Trilogy is a classic coming-of-age tale of John Grady Cole, a 16-year-old youngster in 1949 Texas, who is about to lose everything most dear to him. After returning from World War II, his father is but a shell of his former self, and Coles mother is more interested in self-gratification than in securing her sons legacy, the family 80-year-old ranch. He doesnt read about Indians in books, he observes them in the flesh, and his impressions of them are described in a typical Cormac McCarthy manner and are full of the vivid imagery which enables the reader to see them through his young eyes: "At the hour hed always choose when the shadows were long and the ancient road was shaped before him in the rose and canted light like a dream of the past where the painted ponies and the riders of that lost nation came down out of the north with their faces chalked and their long hair plaited and each armed for war which was their life and the women and children and women with children at their breasts all of them pledged in blood and redeemable in blood only... nation and ghost of nation passing in a soft chorale across that ...
