adventure and hardship, success and slavery. Like many stories, the beginning of the story holds a great deal of information about the main character, Crusoe, and what will come to
him. The following paper examines and analyzes the beginning of Defoes novel as it involves social classes, family expectations, and personal identity. Analysis of the Beginning of Robinson
Crusoe by Defoe Defoes novel speaks of the time frame in the novel in the beginning when noting that the narrator, Crusoe, was born in 1632. His birthplace and time
frame indicate that he was very much prone to living in a society that had expectations concerning class. For the most part people were born and died in their particular
class and the best they could hope for was to move slightly forward in social standing. He indicates his family class by stating, "He got a good estate by merchandise...he
had married my mother...a very good family in that country" (Defoe I). Being that he mentions these things in the first paragraph of the book indicates that these elements are
