This article on placement disruption by Smith et al is a suitable one for analysis for a number of reasons. It deals with a contemporary and relevant topic concerning children
in foster care, the aims and methodology of the study are concisely and clearly laid out, and the authors have applied their conclusions to a broad area of applications. It
is relevant in a number of fields, including sociology, psychology and child welfare, since it deals with the behaviour of adolescents in relation to a particular aspect of society. The
way in which adolescents relate to other social groups is an interesting field of sociological study in itself, and Smiths research also gives insight into some of the background to
aberrant behavioural patterns in foster children.
The authors state that for children who are in foster care, it is well-known that there are certain factors which contribute to placement instability and that this
is something which those in social services have attempted to address for some time. However, although there is a considerable body of research on the way in which placement disruptions
