he previously believed. He is a man who is perhaps a victim of circumstances, and a man who simply wants to, ultimately, belong. The following paper provides and analysis of
the character of Yank in ONeills story. Analysis of Yank in The Hairy Ape The character of Yank had a very troubled childhood, although perhaps not a childhood
unlike many others. His father was an abusive man and his mother died from what he called "tremens" (ONeill 51). He tells a member of the crew how his parents
abusiveness, and fighting, was where he "loined to take punishment (ONeill 50-51). He then indicates that when his mother died he left, presumably to be rid of the violent home.
It is clear from his language and his background that he is not well educated and this is perhaps what will eventually lead him to his end. Yank is
what is called a fireman. He works on a ship and essentially keeps fire in the engines. He is a rough man, and apparently very stocky in his build. He
is, in the eyes of others, not much more than a beast of a man because of his appearance. But, as long as he lives among the men he works
with he does not see himself in this way. He feels he is intelligent and he is all but in charge of all the men. They seem intimidated by him
and this gives him, perhaps, a false sense of intelligence and importance. It is when he meets Mildred that his world changes, and his perception of himself changes. She
is so disgusted by him and his appearance that she faints. He is truly taken aback by this because it is a very new reality for him. He is incredibly
