the man who influenced many to come in relationship to the poetic form. Haiku are very short poems, comprised of 17 syllables. The following essay analyzes three different haikus. (Citation information for the three haikus was not provided by the student and therefore will be referred to as Haiku 1, 2 and 3, although haiku 3 appears to have been written by Basho). Analysis of Three Haikus First and foremost, the three haiku being examined all deal with nature in one way or another. They are haikus that look at a particular item in nature or an overall perspective including many elements of nature, such as the third haiku that offers up the season of autumn. They are also haiku that do not present the reader with any portended ideal or thesis, which is very common in haiku. Haiku 1, which could perhaps be considered to possess 18 syllables, does seem to have a message of sorts, a symbolic reference, as it states how "not yet having become a Buddha/ The ancient pine-tree/ Idly dreaming" (Haiku 1). In this one could perhaps see that the symbolism of the tree is that which addresses the journey of humanity in the desire to be more than they are, to rise spiritually and become enlightened. A tree, however, has no such aspirations and is therefore happy to idly dream. This could well be a message for the reader in relationship to teaching the reader that it may well be better for humans to be like trees and accept life. Or, as one author notes, "The poets job is to experience this earth, this life, and report it to fellow inhabitants in a manner that allows the reader / hearer to experience the insight for him/herself" (Reichhold).
