Manner" (Goethe June 16). In this the reader is introduced to the emotions that the narrator possesses upon first meeting Charolotte, Lotte, and the emotions that will forever haunt him
until his death. The following paper examines what Goethe is saying about relationships, love, as it pertains the narrator, the writer of the letters, Werther, and how he is saying
it. Analysis of The Sorrows of Young Werther Being that this particular novel is clearly of the Romantic Era of literature one can well see the passion and
longing and love within. Not far into the book the reader sees Werther meet Lotte, as seen in the opening quote from the book. He is so taken with her
in spirit and soul, mind and body, and the entire novel revolves around her and his desire to only love her. He claims: "I found penetration and character in everything
she said: every expression seemed to brighten her features with new charms,--with new rays of genius,--which unfolded by degrees, as she felt herself understood" (Goethe June 16). Clearly this is
an illustration of infatuation and yet it is also a love that is all consuming for Werther, as one would likely expect from a romantic novel. In many ways
it seems as though Werther is one of those men who is hopelessly romantic, perhaps only capable of loving Lotte because he cannot have her, thus making his love grow
even more passionate and desperate. Interestingly enough it seems, towards the end of the novel, to be similar to what Lotte discovers she feels as well. She thinks of how
she could find someone for him because she is married and while she cares for him she is not going to be unfaithful to her husband. This desire to set
