This test is given out nationally to students in grades K-8 (Iowa Test of Basic Skills, 2002). This test provides scores for the following areas: listening, word
analysis, vocabulary, reading, comprehension, language, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, usage, visual and reference materials, mathematics, concepts, problem solving, computation, social studies, science, writing and listening supplements (Iowa Test of Basic Skills,
2002). This test is administered by the teacher usually on separate days for different sections of the test. While this test provides a good measure of understanding
in terms of what a student knows, it is still an imperfect device incapable of fully assessing a students educational abilities and knowledge. In terms of reading, this
test has many components which apply to this area. The vocabulary section is multiple choice and presents a word in context. General vocabulary words are used. In
terms of reading comprehension, students read a passage and must draw inferences from what they have read. For the spelling section, the student chooses the correctly spelled word from
five options. In the capitalization and punctuation sections, students must identify errors. Usage and expression gives students several lines of writing and the student is asked to see
if they find any errors. If they do find an error they must identify the line, or, they can simply mark "no error" if that is what they find
to be the case. Teaching English as a second language presents many real and varied issues in terms of this test. ESL students have the added responsibility
of needing to be able to read the test and have additional problems with all other sections of the test as well, since English does not come naturally to these
