is a curious work. Although the composition differs, the piece is not unlike the subject matter in Boticellis Birth of Venus. Also created during the Italian Renaissance, Boticellis work
highlights the esoteric nature of the world where Di Cosimo is more realistic. Yet, it is similar in that the composition contains figures which are placed carefully in the scene.
Each contains clothed figures and one nude. In The Finding of Vulcan on Lemnos, the subjects are all female, except for the Vulcan. Most are at least partially, or fully,
clothed and the nude subject is in the center, presumably the Vulcan is being helped to his feet. The nude is actually small and the genital area is muddled. In
mythology, the Vulcan is the god of fire and is thought to have been disfigured to some extent. In this work, the figure appears to be in adolescence but the
body is not clearly male or female. If in fact, this figure is the god in question, it is a male god. In any event, while the nude is centered,
the composition is interesting. The figures take up much of the picture. Yet, the background clearly shows through. On the left, there are two women looking at one another. It
appears that they had been engaged in conversation. One wears a dress and balances a basket of flowers, or plant matter, on top of her head. She barely touches the
arm of her companion, whose breasts are exposed, and carries what appears to be a small animal. It might be a baby unicorn, or a very small lamb, but it
is difficult to tell. In the center, again, is the small scenario between the young nude on the ground, and the woman above who appears to be helping him
