a painting filled with despair and violence. It is a painting based on a story from Greek mythology and yet also a painting that is powerfully relevant, even today. The
following paper examines and analyzes The Fall of Phaeton. Analysis of The Fall of Phaeton by Peter Paul Rubens "Peter Paul Rubens...was a prolific seventeenth-century Flemish Baroque painter,
and a proponent of an exuberant Baroque style that emphasized movement, color, and sensuality" (China Oil Painting, 2010). He was a painter who followed with the social and political trends
of the time, painting religious paintings. But, he was also a man who painted outside of the expected norm while also painting portraits and serving as a diplomat. He was
also very much influenced by previous artists in history, such as "Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo" and in this particular painting "The lighting reveals Rubens attention to Venetian artists
as well" (National Gallery of Art , 2010). In general he was very well known for many things such as portraits, landscapes, historical paintings, religious paintings, and Counter-Reformation altarpieces. Some,
perhaps, would argue that he is likely most noted and famous for having created what is known as the Rubenesque women, women who were very plump and voluptuous. In
relationship to this particular painting it is oil on canvas and was perhaps painted in 1604-1605 but yet reworked over the years by Rubens. It is a painting that is
inspired by a Greek story involving Helios, a Greek god, and his son Phaeton. "With the rashness of youth, Phaeton tricked his father into letting him drive the chariot. The
horses instantly bolted, scorching everything in their path with the suns heat" (National Gallery of Art, 2010). Zeus sent a thunderbolt which set things in balance it seems but also
