Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This 10 page paper delves into the 1996 TWA Flight 800 crash with a focus on technical aspects. A variety of theories are explored including the official explanation as being mechanical failure to more extraordinary suppositions such as those that involve missiles or bombs. The physical evidence is examined through the eyes of retired military personnel and newsman Pierre Salinger. The paper concludes that the bomb theory is most plausible. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

eventually drawn have been refuted by pilots, reporters and laymen alike. While the incident had been officially explained away with the notion that it was the aircrafts condition as opposed
to an outside intrusion, such as a bomb or a missile, many still hang on to stories told in secret by Navy personnel, reporters like Pierre Salinger and eye witnesses
who had sworn they saw something hit that plane. While many have tried to come up with an adequate explanation as to why eye witnesses claim to have seen missiles
and also as to why reports continue to surface about government cover-ups, these have been disappointingly weak. People continue to believe one theory or another. A closer examination of the
technical aspects of the flights demise is in order. II. Theories It was a Mechanical Failure While
investigators admittedly had never found out what caused the center fuel tank to ignite, most theories focus on an electrical spark from faulty wiring ("Down," 1998). In reviewing airplanes in
general, it has been noted that both high and low voltage wires which run from the flight deck to the center fuel tank are bundled together; thus, an electrical current
could arc near a tank and cause an explosion (1998). After reviewing the Flight 800 disaster, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) inferred that this may have been indeed the
case and recommended that planes be rewired to separate the two voltages (1998). Another possible source of a spark which could have indeed ignited Flight 800 to its ultimate conclusion
is the fuel probes. Tests on the fuel gauges inside of the center tank revealed cracked insulation that exposed bare wires; this is certainly another possible source for a spark
