systems theory is applicable to the nursing profession. Nurses must have resources to make sense of patients lives and understand the importance of familial relationships. Friedman (1998) explains that the
family system balances inner and outer environments as situations demand (1998). Stress can interfere with family systems, and if problems are not resolved, they may create dangerous situations (1998). A
family crisis can easily evolve when a family is under stress and unless help is received, the family can begin to fall apart (1998). The author goes on to point
out that there are subsystems in the family as well (1998). For example, there may be four children which comprise a subsystem.
More precisely, Talcott Parsons (1995) defines systems as being both a complex of interdependencies between parts, components, and processes which involve other defined relationships and also includes an interdependency between
such and the surrounding environment. Systems theory also embraces the notion that the concept may be applied to a variety of things such as those within the boundaries of social,
biological and mechanical labels (McLeish, 1993). In other words, there are many types of systems. A family may be seen as a system, and in respect to this particular entity,
