human one, of course. The novel is an inquiry into the enigma of the self- or, as Kundera also likes to say, of existence. To be sure, the novelist invents
characters, but these characters are put into the service of an existential interrogation. This is what every novelist does; the good novelist is the one who knows how to push
the exploration to its end, the one who is not merely content to formulate a purely subjective opinion about this or that existential problem, but who succeeds in seizing its
essence. In this way the novel leads to genuine knowledge, and this knowledge is precious." The following paper take Kunderas novel "Ignorance" and examines whether or not it succeeds in
application by Kundera. Kunderas "Ignorance" In understanding whether or not Kundera is successful in applying his own demands on his work we look first at the opinions of others,
critics, in relationship to his work in general. One author states, "Though slightly thicker than Kunderas previous French offerings and hinting at the pre-Slowness fiction that won him a rabid
following, Ignorance suffers from a seemingly hurried narrative whose end may produce in some fans a nostalgia for Kundera at his deepest and most playful" (Tinney 94). Such a statement
seems to indicate that Kundera is perhaps not successful in applying his own theories, for there appears to be little depth in terms of providing the reader with any powerful
