growth in the story is that of the narrator, not Sonny, who goes from rejection of his brothers neediness, to appreciation and finally to understanding and acceptance. Discussion The story
is so rich and tightly-woven that its difficult to pick just three scenes to discuss, because that means so much important material is left out. Still, well start with the
scene between the narrator and his and Sonnys mutual friend. In this scene, the narrator (we never hear his name, we only know that he is Sonnys brother and seven
years Sonnys elder) learns that Sonny has been arrested for possession and use of heroin. He is filled with dread at the news, which he describes as like having ice
in his gut all day; he teaches algebra and can barely get through his classes (Baldwin). At the end of the day he leaves the school and runs into a
friend of his and Sonnys: "The courtyard was almost deserted by the time I got downstairs. I saw this boy standing in the shadow of a doorway, looking just like
Sonny ... Then I saw that it wasnt Sonny, but somebody we used to know, a boy from around our block" (Baldwin). The young man is a panhandler, a
bum, someone the narrator has never liked, especially as hes always begging for money (Baldwin). But this time he seems to be on a mission; after a few desultory remarks,
the other man asks a very pointed question, to which the narrator has no good answer: "Whatre you going to do?" he asked me. "I mean, about Sonny?" (Baldwin). This
