these episodes of violence seem to come from nowhere, suddenly erupting in devastating events in one school or another. And such shootings occur in the schools of children as well as adults. There are perhaps many reasons why some students become violent and many believe it has to do with a number of factors such as home life, parenting styles, the media, video games, bullying and many other conditions of society today. The following paper examines various articles which address the issue of school violence in order to better understand why such school shootings occur. Analysis of School Shootings Many people may well wonder when school shootings really began to be a problem. One author notes that, "The school shooting in 1966 at the University of Texas marked the beginning of an era of increased mass murders."1 In this particular article the author notes how another individual, Ann Marie C. Lenhardt, conducted a study, for almost ten years, involving 15 schools shooters "and found that 71% felt isolated and rejected by peers. They feel bullied and persecuted. Their coping skills are poor, and they have extreme needs for attention and respect."2 This information indicates that, in one perspective, people who engage in school shootings are bullied by others and are seen as different. They are also individuals who do not have the best of social or coping skills and this is something that is likely perpetuated, or even created, through other forces. For example, a parent who raises a child in a particular way may be enhancing their inability to cope and then with the further influence of the media through violent shows and then violent video games the child feels they have found a way to deal with their inability to cope.
