essay is seems somewhat impersonal, as if hes describing someone else. This paper analyzes his essay in detail. Discussion Rodriguez is the son of Mexican immigrants and his relationship with them is one of the most important points of discussion in his paper. He describes the way in which his education began to distance him from his parents, an effect of his increasing education that was both surprising and distressing. Rodriguez says that the one thing that he needed for his studies was quiet, and he couldnt find that in his family home. So, rather than do his work at the corner of the kitchen table, he would retreat to a bedroom where he could be alone. He read incessantly, taking out ten books at a time and going through them as quickly as possible. This obsession with reading took hold of him around the fourth grade, so he was not reading with any comprehension. Instead, as he admits, he was reading because he knew his teachers were well-read, and he wanted to emulate them. But his incessant reading began to distance him from his parents, and this is an on-going theme in the essay, how everything he did to get good grades and become a good student made it more difficult for him to relate to his parents and the life he lived outside of school. In effect, he was trying to live in two different worlds, that of the son of poor Mexican immigrants, and that of the "scholarship boy" who was succeeding in school. Rodriguez writes that he saw, from the earliest days, "through the years following, it will be with his parents- the figures of lost authority, the persons toward whom he feels deepest love-that the change will be most powerfully measured.
