all, envied by all, yet also a man who committed suicide. It is perhaps unlike many poems, including the sonnets of Shakespeare. For, although Shakespeare wrote poetry, he was considered
more of a dramatist and as one author notes, "A dramatist would have been under the necessity of justifying the suicide by some train of events in which Richard Corys
character would have inevitably betrayed him" (Morris). The following paper analyzes elements of Robinsons poem. Analysis of Richard Cory by Robinson In Robinsons poem the main character, as
would be expected, is Richard Cory. His presence in a city seemed to bring out a sense of awe in people, giving them something they could perhaps aspire to, or
dream of aspiring too. This is because he was "was a gentleman from sole to crown" (Robinson 3). He was essentially the envy of all the people of this particular
town. He was wealthy and always seemed calm and wise and kind. In fact, the people "thought that he was everything/ To make us wish that we were in his
place" (Robinson 11-12). But, he was clearly a man who was not happy and not everything he appeared to be for he went home and shot himself dead. Most
people have other people that they look up to in an envious manner, believing that someone elses life is far better than their own. It is the old adage of
the grass always being greener on the other side of the fence which means people have a tendency to believe that other people live a better, and happier, life than
they do. They are envious and wish they had another persons life. It is perhaps the nature of humanity to desire something someone else has, or to believe someones life
