many near-death situations while he is on a sea voyage. But this is just the beginning of his journey. The "real" journey for Pym is in fact much
deeper. Pym actually is the ghost-writer of this story, and so the dilemmas of Pym actually highlight many of those of Poe himself. But it is the relationships
that Pym has with Augustus and Dirk Peters that reflect and mirror the real Pym, and in this way illustrate the changes that Pym himself incurs.
Pym seeks adventure and a life full of new experiences. Despite a trip that begins terribly, Pym doesnt give up on his dreams.
However, in the process of trying to attain his dreams, he has a plethora of wild encounters and experiences, ranging from a mutiny that threatens to be devastating to cannibalism,
which highlights the darkest side of human nature. It is Pym who is involved in many hoaxes, including his role as a ghost-writer. In this way, the problem
of truth and the process of writing are illuminated because of this technique. The true nature of Pym, however, is best
evidenced in his relationship with both Augustus and Dirk Peters. Augustus is the son of the captain of the ship of which Pym is a stowaway. Together, they
dream and they encourage one another to experience life to its fullest. However, there is a distinct difference between these two characters. It is during this adventure
that Pym first acquiesces to the elements, and from that point he is followed (in the first episode) by good fortune and luck. Augustus, who does not so acquiesce, undergoes
