these issues manifest themselves in the "real" world, it is important to critically assess a current example, which in this case is the matter of national defense.
There are a plethora of public goods that the government provides. These goods are referred to as public goods because the private
sector cannot successfully provide them (Cowen, 2003). This would include things like national defense - an issue that is particularly poignant in todays world. Imagine if private firms
existed and were "selling" national defense. Suppose you bought some, but I did not. Clearly there is no way to provide this service to just the paying customers.
Therefore, national defense falls in the realm of "public goods", or those things that are provided to everyone in the society.
And yet, in todays world we may offer the argument that not everyone necessarily wants those public goods. For example, with the recent Iraqi situation, the President
determined that it was in our national best interest that we invade Iraq, as a means of securing the safety of all Americans. However, there was a very significant
and vocal portion of the population in this country that did not support this action. Therefore, these people preferred NOT to be recipients of such public goods, as they
believed such action was unnecessary. Obviously, in the end, U.S. troops did indeed end up invading Iraq, and therefore provided
