information on using this paper properly! William Shakespeare seemed to have a particular fascination with mothers and sons. His most famous tragedy, Hamlet, was primarily concerned with a
relationship between mother and son which had undeniable incestuous overtones. In what would be his final tragedy, Coriolanus, the Bard again contemplated the relationship between mothers and sons, specifically,
in the instance of a strong and domineering mother and an obedient son whose every act was calculated to please his mother. It is believed this play was completed
in 1608, and coincided with the death of Shakespeares own mother, which may or may not have influenced the plays plot. There is no way to know for certain,
but perhaps Coriolanus was an example of art imitating life, and may well have resembled Shakespeares own relationship with his mother, with the prolific playwright constantly seeking to win his
mothers approval. If Volumnia had been born a male, she would have, most likely, been one of the most fearless of Roman warriors. Since she could not do it
herself, she would carefully groom her son Caius Martius (who later was given the name Coriolanus by a grateful general) to perform the exploits that she was prohibited from engaging
in, on the basis of her gender. Coriolanus was an extremely dutiful son, and his single-minded focus was in becoming the courageous and noble soldier his mother always wanted
him to be, at the exclusion of all else, including the development of interpersonal skills. He remained completely devoted to Volumnia even after marrying Virgilia and starting a family
of his own. Coriolanus enjoys many military successes and earns the rank of general, but is seriously disliked by the citizens of Rome for his aristocratic arrogance. Coriolanus
