born Eugen Berthold Friedrich Brecht in Ausburg, Germany in 1898 (Berthold Brecht, 2000), to a working class family. Though this father was a Catholic, his mother was protestant and
he was raised in this faith for much of his young life(Berthold Brecht, 1998). Brecht, considered by some to be one of the greatest German playwrights of his time,
related a number of dramatic concepts that reflected his political perspectives in the development and presentation of the major themes in his writing. Brechts education provided a basis for his
understanding of the world. In 1917, he began his studies a the University of Munich, with the intent to study philosophy and medicine (Berthold Brecht, 1998). Within a
year, Brecht was assigned to work in a military hospital, a problematic placement that helped Brecht understand the traumatic issues extending from military conflict. His opposition to what he
