with the dark side of society and humanity. However, in 1990-91, Stone undertook his biggest challenge ever - tackling the greatest murder mystery of the twentieth century - the
assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. In JFK, the major social issue the film confronts is how society can be lied to, uninformed about activities
that threatened national security, and betrayed to by a government in which citizens place their unconditional faith and allegiance and expect protection and truth from in return. The story
is told through the perspective of crusading New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner), a real-life figure who remains the only person to ever prosecute the Kennedy assassination in
a court of law (Keller 63). Garrison constructs a complex murder conspiracy theory that revolves around the CIA, the military industrial complex, and anti-Castro Cuban nationalists living in the
United States (Keller 63). The film even suggests that President Lyndon Johnson had prior knowledge of the plot to kill the Commander in Chief (Keller 63). The American
public was still reeling from the very real threats posed by Fidel Castros Cuba after the 1961 Bay of Pigs and the Cuban Missile Crisis the following year. The
film implies that JFK made a deal with Russian Premier Nikita Khrushchev, in which he promised not to invade Cuba if the Soviet Unions arsenal of nuclear weapons was removed
(Keller 63). This, according to Garrisons scenario, was enough to infuriate the Cuban nationals enough to want Kennedy dead (Keller 63).
