Hawthorne are inseparable from the geographical and cultural landscape of New England, with the deeply-embedded traditions of the Puritan religion. The author is masterful at conveying ethical messages through
his novels and short stories, illuminated through somber symbolism and striking metaphorical images. Protagonists are often met with perplexing ethical dilemmas, and must carry the burden of the collective
sins bequeathed by Puritan forefathers. As a product of an unforgiving Calvinist religion, Nathaniel Hawthorne was, himself, a haunted soul, and perhaps his stories were a way to exorcise
his personal demons. One critic would write of Hawthorne, "It is difficult to know what turns a man inward to the extent that the amenities of an introduction could
strike a sort of terror to the heart... More an observer of life than a participant, the New Englander was morbidly shy and reclusive... He also dressed in black, and
often concealed his frame and face from onlookers by wearing a black cloak, perhaps as a symbol of a fearful secret between him and them" (Barna 324). The true
source of the authors inner torment was never revealed, but there was little doubt that "evil [was] a very real force to Hawthorne" (Lovecraft From Supernatural Horror in Literature).
