Ahab is a man driven by his hatred of this animal, and clearly this hatred consumes him entirely. This passage reveals the extent to which his hatred has
permeated his entire being, and in that vein, has removed much of his humanity. This passage reveals a double enemy.
First, Ahab and his shipmates spot ahead a vast pool of sperm whales, and this excites them because the enemy is at hand. However, as they chase these
whales they are also being chased by someone who hunts them as much as they hunt the whales. They are being followed by a Malay pirate ship, and this
clearly disrupts their plans. Their boat, however, it catapulted through the vast pool of whales after they manage to harpoon
one of them. The force of this brings them into the very center of all these whales, and they are entirely surrounded. As the passage from this chapter
says, "he glanced upon the green walls of the watery defile in which the ship was then sailing, and bethought him that through that gate lay the route to his
vengeance". This passage highlights an extreme sense of violence, and reveals the chaos and out-of-control nature of the moment.
In this way, the physical characteristics of the setting mimic the personal characteristics of Ahab, and his wildly crazy quest against the whale that he seeks. Clearly, Melville has
