1. Introduction The development and introduction of any new product needs to either meet a demand that is present in the commercial or consumer environment, or where there is not a demand the new product and the way it is marketed should be able to create the demand (Kotler, 2003). The demand may be the result of a need that is recognised, a need that is not recognised due to a gap in the market or simply a desire. Unless a demand is present or can be stimulated the product will not sell (Kotler, 2003). The way demand develop results from numerous factors, these include the economic, demographic, cultural, natural, technological and political influences. These influence impact on the markets and all other companies in the same markets, having a direct impact and an indirect influence in the way other companies are competing. One industry that is seeing a great deal of change, despite its well established nature, is the automotive industry; in particular the market for cars. There have been many changes in the macro environment in recent years, from an increased awareness of pollution to the rising cost of fuel all have combined to exert an influence for cars that are cleaner and cost less to run and increased the sales of smaller cars. Despite this there are still some gaps in the market, small cars tend to have a lower level of comfort compared to the larger cars, and they may be more efficient due to the smaller engine size, but can still be highly inefficient.
