The following examination of leadership focuses on analyzing the leadership behaviors of a specific supervisor who is known to the student researching this topic. For the purposes of identification in this essay, this individual will be referred to as Mr. S. In the following analysis, various leadership theories and models are described, offering their analysis of their applicability to Mr. S. As this suggests, the leadership traits and skills, as well as the leadership style and philosophy of Mr. S will be summarized before presenting an analysis of how this supervisor uses his power and authority, as well as a description of the supervisors strengths, as well as analysis of areas for improvement. Larkin (2005) indicates that Integral theory is highly relevant to social work practice because this approach encompasses a global perspective, which includes society, culture and the environment. This theoretical approach describes the various relationships that exist within organizations and with their communities. Approaches to leadership based on contingency theory are premised on the idea that there is "no one best way to lead," rather this theory holds that different situations call for different leadership behaviors (Packard, 2012, p. 149). The leadership of Mr. S. fits with this theoretical approach in that this supervisor views subordinates as capable of self-motivation and self-direction. This combines with his inherent flexibility and adaptability, enabling him to respond to each management situation in an appropriate manner that fits the situation.
