on using this paper properly! Amid the heated discord in America over the Vietnam War, author Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. metaphorically sifted through the ashes of Dresden, Germany, the beautiful
town in which Allied bombings left over 125,000 people dead during World War II. The world conjured up in Vonneguts 1969 novel, Slaughterhouse Five, was one intent on self-destruction.
It is chaos, and protagonist and one-time American soldier Billy Pilgrim is the passive observer who seeks to comprehend what it all means, and he suffers each death as
if it is his own. His journey is a solitary one toward spiritual understanding, and is conveyed through a series of flashbacks, in which Billy achieves an enlightenment that
encompasses the past, present and future. Is Billy Pilgrim merely an example of Vonneguts anti-war sentiments, or is he intended to represent as modern-day Jesus? There are several biblical
references interwoven throughout the complex descriptive tapestry of Slaughterhouse Five. Billys mother becomes fixated by a gruesome crucifix she finds in a gift store. The crucifix finds its
way onto Billys bedroom wall, and the solitary boy often "contemplated torture and hideous wounds at the beginning and at the end of nearly every day of his childhood" (38).
The fact that the crucifix depicts a dead Jesus is significant because it represents to Billy a leap of faith. Vonnegut wrote, "Billys Christ died horribly. He
was pitiful" (38). This immediately imbues the youth with a fatalistic view of the world, which young Jesus also had. Man, he became convinced, was born to die,
