be the future. People have a hard time visualizing and comprehending the life of the people who lived during the mid-1800s for example. How they lived is unconscionable to a
teenager with an ipod and a cell phone. Yet, people lived rather simply and while some may think it is something awful, others look at those days gloriously and romanticize
the lifestyle and the quietness that must have been present. Many people do have reverence for the people who came before. In looking at Canadian history, it was during the
mid-1800s that a change would occur and life would become more industrialized for some. Yet, in exploring a painting by Paul Kane called A Sketch on Lake Huron one can
see that life was rather old fashioned and had little in the way of modern conveniences. The composition of the painting is brilliant. On the left, there are a few
people seated next to a boat and a dog accompanies them. Canoes are everywhere. Unlike in modern times, when boats were kept at docks, it seems as if these canoes
are "parked" right outside the teepees which serve as homes. The canoes are found for the most part upside down, presumably so water does not get inside. The scene is
multitude as there is no center of focus. Right in the center however is one brilliant teepee. Outside, a woman washes clothing. Other people are sitting or standing in this
community that is replete with a variety of teepees. These tents build communities. Much like a development of today in suburbia, these cloth made homes serve as protection from weather.
One can imagine that it is not much protection, at least not by todays standards. But this is how the people lived and Kane shows this quite succinctly in this
