making widespread changes for Americans, and that these and other policies had a dramatic impact on the standard of living for the majority of Americans.
For instance, The New Deal is a prime example of a governmental program that had a profound impact on the American way of life, and created both
positive and negative ramifications within the marketplace. In this way, these policies affected the lives of both union workers as well as non-union workers, raising the overall standard of
living for all Americans. The New Deal was a program initiated during the administration of Roosevelt. When Roosevelt took office
in 1933, he adopted a plethora of programs to create jobs, provide economic relief, and stimulate the economy that had taken such a beating during the years of the Great
Depression. Metzgar argues that many of these policies manipulated the laws of supply and demand in order to achieve the end result of improving the standard of living for
Americans. For instance, the New Deal created a number of programs aimed at reducing unemployment, such as the Farm Security Administration
and the National Labor Relations Act. It was the National Labor Relations Act that served to legalize practices such as closed shops (which only allowed union workers) and it
also provided for the National Labor Board, which was established to enforce the provisions of the National Labor Relations Act. The
