life as he lays dying. The man is Harry and although he is not necessarily a likeable character, he is a human character with faults and dreams. The following paper
presents an analysis of his character. Analysis of Harry in Hemingways The Snows of Kilimanjaro At the very beginning of the story Harry seems to be a considerate man
who cares about his wife. He states, "Im awfully sorry about the odor though. That must bother you" (Hemingway). He seems to speak calmly, telling her he is sorry but
talking helps him, even though she seems bothered by his talking. In essence, in the first few lines he seems a likeable man who is considerate. However, as the story
evolves one sees that he is really only trying to be polite and that he really may not care that much for her, or anyone for that matter. When
he states, " Youre such a bloody fool" in reference to her opinions (Hemingway). He is impatient with her as she tries to tell him he isnt dying and he
knows that death is near. He begins to think of himself and his life, immersing himself in the glories that perhaps were, or could have been, and how he never
really did what he wanted to do. As one critic notes, he is "a disillusioned writer" (Arthur). But, in reality he is far more than that. It may be that
he is far closer to another critics opinion who states that he is "a deceptive, dying, decaying writer" (Gagne). In these perceptions, and in reading the story, one can
readily see that Harry is indeed a writer, but it also seems as though most of what could be written never was. "Now he would never write the things that
