me?" The answer is, there is plenty for the contemporary student to relate to concerning the trials and tribulations of a sixteenth-century Danish prince. He is a young man whose life has been suddenly thrown into chaos as a result of murder and betrayal. Hamlet struggles with his own personal anguish, while at the same time, he is also grappling with a troubled love affair and trying to live up to the expectations of others. He is, quite simply, suffering from intense growing pains and has been forced by circumstances to instantly transform himself from boy to man. Hamlet was a student at Wittenberg University when he received the news that his father, King Hamlet, had been inexplicably murdered. Then, a scant three months later, he receives another shock when his widowed mother, Queen Gertrude, exchanges vows with her brother-in-law (and Prince Hamlets uncle), Claudius, who then assumes the title of King. In a supernatural encounter with the ghost of his father, Hamlet is told, "The serpent that sting thy fathers life / Now wears his crown" (I.v.37-38). Although Hamlet vows to seek swift vengeance, he frequently fails to act quickly. Why? The answer might lie with the inner conflicts that were raging within Hamlet regarding his concept of honor and his desire to o the right thing, and make his father proud. Occasionally showing signs of strain, Hamlet will exclaim in frustration, "The time is out of joint. O cursed spite / That ever I was born to set it right!"
