be relevant to contemporary readers in A Verse Narrative, observed, "It is virtually impossible to determine when the material was first written down, let alone when it originated orally
or how long it existed in an oral tradition. Rather it can be assumed, from the materials handed down from succeeding ancient peoples and languages, that it was not
composed all of a piece and at one time but was added to gradually and varied by many tellers" (98). Although Mason and other students of Gilgamesh believe the
folktale was based on a real-life king of Uruk, the reason its allure remains timeless is not because of its historical significance or because it is an artifact from a
bygone civilization, but because of the undeniable human thread that is interwoven through the structure, characters, and themes. It is the epics humanity that resonates with readers, and such
themes as mans life journey toward the attainment of wisdom, friendship, death, loss and grief go to the very heart of the human condition then and now. Throughout the course
of the story, Gilgamesh takes several physical journeys. However, the one most important is the metaphysical journey he takes to and for the wisdom that will ultimately result in
the self-realization he achieves at the end of his life. An important stop along the way is his fateful meeting with Enkidu in the wilderness. Before embarking upon
